Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ Isn’t Your Traditional Horror Film

Can you write a review on a movie that you’ve only seen once? I feel like it’s just like reviewing a new album or mixtape…you have to listen to it more than once to really get a feel for everything. But here’s my initial reaction of Jordan Peele’s new horror movie…Us.

The one thing I can say whether you like the movie Us or not is it makes you think. I don’t really know how I felt after the movie ended and I’m still not quite sure but it’s been having me think A LOT. To be honest, even after reading multiple articles dissecting everything from Jeremiah 11:11 and the significance of the rabbits. I’m still a little confused…and that’s okay.

I had really high expectations for Us because Jordan Peele is a creative genius and I loved Get Out so much. So much so that I saw the movie 4 times. As we already saw from Get Out, Jordan Peele uses symbolism, imagery and an amazing soundtrack to reel the audience in with thematic explorations, social issues and just an outlandish plot that resonates with all of us. So did I expect anything different with Us? Nope, but it was much less obvious to explore than Get Out.

Us is categorized as a horror film and there were definitely a few times throughout the movie that I had my hands covering my eyes on the edge of my seat because I knew something crazy was about to happen. However, it’s not your traditional horror film. It wasn’t like watching the movie Insidious, which is the point. Peele has his own style which is even more evident with his sophomore film.

Here are some of my favorite parts of the movie:

  • When Adelaide was snapping off beat to “I Got Five On It”. (That part itself was a little suspicious)
  • When Zora did what she had to do and aimed to kill not just injure the doppelgängers.
  • When the Tyler family’s doppelgängers came and killed them all right away. It was unexpected and was a plot twist because before that moment, I believed the doppelgängers were just specific to Adelaide’s family.

After giving myself a couple of days for this movie to resonate, I’ve decided I will be seeing it again because there’s just so much to analyze with this film and I’m still shook at the ending. But I’m still on the fence on whether I actually liked it.

What’d you think of Us?
