I really, really enjoyed Netflix’s original series, Bridgerton and not just for the obvious eye candy AKA The Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page).
Yes, I finished the season in one day. Yes, the next day I was ready to watch it again.
I have not read the books so I pretty much had no clue what to expect and period romances, especially the 18th century’s Regency era, don’t usually interest me, but the Netflix preview is what got me. I must admit I’m a sucker for a good romance sprinkled with a bit of drama. And the fact that Bridgerton was trending on Netflix for days, I HAD to found out what the hype was about. Not only that, but it was executive produced by Shonda Rhimes – the queen that brought us hits like Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy.
Would Shondaland disappoint?
NOPE.
It was quirky, sweet, funny and it indeed made me cry. My favorite scene of all is when Simon was explaining to the Queen why she should grant Simon and Daphne a speedy wedding. The way he described his love for her…UGH the tears. Though the love story between Simon and Daphne was a bit problematic and toxic at times, their chemistry just exuded through the screen.
I also enjoyed the glimpses in to the lives of the other characters and how complex they were. I did not expect for Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) to be Lady Whistledown – the biggest mystery that was revealed this season.
But the more important pressing matter for me is what is going to happen with Marina (Ruby Barker)?? How does her story end? I NEED TO KNOW.
In addition to the wonderful acting and magnificent costumes, the soundtrack was spot on and was a nice surprise. From its classical versions of modern songs like Ariana Grande’s “thank you, next” and Billie Ellish’s “Bad Guy” to the sultry and upbeat tempos, the music fit the moment and mood of each scene perfectly.
If you haven’t yet watched Bridgerton, I highly recommend it – definitely a must see.
