Why Grownish Hits the Nail on the Head about Adulting for Millennials

So I’m always late to the party when it comes to TV shows but better late than never, right? SO, I got Hulu a few weeks ago with the intent of binge watching all the episodes of my favorite show, Law and Order: SVU *que the theme song.* But after a suggestion from my coworker, I decided to browse the catalog of shows Hulu had to offer and whala!…my new tv show addiction was found…Grownish

Okay, so I when I heard about Blackish getting a spinoff show where the main character, Zoey would be venturing off to college, I thought oh okay that would be cute, but still that wasn’t enough to get me to watch. Keep in mind, I only watched an episode or two of Blackish and I wasn’t hooked, so there wasn’t anything for me personally to get excited about. Buuut I had been hearing good reviews from different people about Grownish so I thought hey why not check it out.

So here we are 3 days later and I’m waiting for Hulu to finish loading so I can find out who the heck Zoey is going to pick! All of the episodes this season  lead up to this moment. I felt like I was waiting for Tyra Banks to announce the winner of America’s Next Top Model. Okay maybe a tad bit dramatic…

But I found myself venting on Twitter and Snapchat because I wouldn’t be able to take it if Zoey chose Cash, the typical f***boy. There was honestly no debate to me like obviously choose Aaron, he’s awkward and cute and you can tell he really cares about Zoey. As for Luka, that whole laid back, nonchalant attitude just wasn’t enough for me. But I guess it was for Zoey since she ended up picking Luka in the end.

SIDENOTE: Where were all the boys fighting over me during my freshman year of college?

This brings up another point…my freshman experience was NOTHING like Zoey’s. I mean nothing. No adderall, no crazy parties, no boy struggles. But definitely procrastination and some semi crazy friends. Watching it from a post-graduate perspective, I think I relate more than I did while I was in college. It was easy to be able to connect to at least one person, and if not them specifically, at least their struggles.

Although on the surface some things didn’t resonate others did and I think that’s what the show is all about. From awkward humor, relatable coming of age experiences and real life issues such as many college athletes struggling financially, colorism, and the huge impact social media has on the youth today, I can definitely say Grownish hit the nail on the head with an array of topics.

Oh and let me not forget to mention my favorite thing about the show…the fact that the title of each episode was that of a rap and R&B song, making it even more relatable to our generation.

Overall, I give Grownish two thumbs up for giving a fresh look into the craziness and struggle of navigating adulthood.

  1. I guess after I finish watching The Game on Hulu I will see if I can get into Grownish to see what all of the hype is about.
