Lizzo Makes Music History with “Truth Hurts”

Lizzo has made history by becoming the first black woman in 2019 to score a No. 1 hit!

It’s crazy how life works. Two years ago, Lizzo was promoting “Truth Hurts” at the VMAs and now that same song has made its way to the top of the charts on Billboard’s Hot 100.
“Truth Hurts” is one of those songs that is just so catchy that you don’t mind hearing it being played 10,000 times on the radio because its deserves all the recognition. And as a requirement, you have to sing this song at the top of your lungs no matter where you are.

I myself hadn’t heard of Lizzo until one of my close friends played her on a road trip and then again when my uncle played her songs at a party. But like many others, it wasn’t until I watched the movie, Someone Great where the main character was going through a heart break and her and her best friend sang this song at the top of their lungs, that  that song really hit me. At that moment all I could think was, “What is this beautiful masterpiece and who wrote it?” She asked the question of the lifetime: “Why men great until they gotta be great?” I paused the movie and immediately went to Google to search the lyrics and there was Lizzo. After my discovery, I listened to that song on repeat for like a week straight. I was going through my own semi-heartbreak and this song resonated with me so much and made me feel 10 times better because I am indeed 100 percent that…

Lizzo’s entertaining performance of “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell” at the 2019 VMAs definitely aided in the song reaching the No. 1 spot.  According to Billboard, “Truth Hurts” saw a 21 percent increase in streams following the show’s airing, which can be argued as one of the best performances of the night. Currently, it is No. 1 in sales and top 5 in streams and airplay.

In response to her number 1 hit, Lizzo tweeted, “WE’RE NUMBER 1. THIS IS A W FOR ALL OF US. “ANYBODY WHO EVER FELT LIKE THEY VOICE WASN’T HEARD. ANYBODY WHO FELT LIKE THEY WEREN’T GOOD ENOUGH. YOU ARE. WE ARE. CHAMPIONS. I LOVE YALL 3 MUCH. LIZZBIANS UNITE.”

What I have learned from Lizzo and many other great artists: Never stop working. Keep Pushing. Don’t Give Up.
